Online DUI Classes or In-Person DUI Classes?

Illinois DUI defense lawyerThough they are not a new thing, online DUI classes have become more mainstream. They were once only available to individuals who did not have a physical class near them, but now anyone can choose this option. However, it is not the right DUI class for everyone. Learn more about the online classes, including how they compare to physical classes and how it is that you can determine if they are the right option for you.

Advantages to Online DUI Classes

Being forced to attend a physical class is embarrassing and inconvenient on many different levels. First, you must ask for time off work to attend, which means you are going to miss out on the income you need to pay for your class and fines. You also need to arrange a ride to the class; this may require asking a friend, neighbor, or family member that may not know about your DUI arrest. So, now everyone knows about the mistake you made. Online classes can help you avoid all this trouble.

Online classes can be taken from the comfort of your own home, without ever having to tell anyone about the DUI. You may even have the option of completing the course at a time that is convenient for you. So, if you work during the day, you may be able to complete your course in the evening without ever having to miss work.

Disadvantages to Online DUI Classes

Online DUI classes are often more expensive than in-person classes. Further, studies suggest that learning retention goes down when reading digital material. Unfortunately, this could impact a person’s ability to understand the potential consequences of continuing to drive while intoxicated. Thankfully, most offenders do get the message the first time around, regardless of whether they attend classes online or in-person. However, those that struggle with addiction may not do well with online DUI courses.

Addiction and a DUI

Repeat offenders and individuals who struggle with addiction are often best served through in-person classes – not because of the class itself, but because they are often more likely to seek additional help and support when forced to do in-person classes. So, if you or someone you love experienced a DUI stemming from addiction, it may be best to take the in-person classes, rather than the online DUI course.
